FOR MY STUDENTS Q&A

Both 「のに」 and 「けど」 are conjunctions used to express contrast—when what happens in the second part of a sentence is unexpected or different from what you’d expect based on the first part.

Even though / Although (with emotion or surprise)

✔ Nuance:

  • Stronger contrast
  • Often expresses the speaker's emotion, such as surprise, disappointment, frustration, or criticism
  • Common in written language or emotional statements

✔ Examples:

Even though I studied, I failed the test.
    (Shows disappointment or frustration)
Even though it was raining, he didn’t bring an umbrella.
    (Implies surprise or criticism)

But / However / Though (milder)

✔ Nuance:

  • Weaker contrast
  • Often used to give neutral information, or just to show a contrast without emotion
  • Common in spoken language
  • Sometimes used just as a softener or introductory phrase

✔ Examples:

The movie was interesting, but it was a bit long.
Excuse me, but do you have a moment?
(Here, "けど" just softens the request)
